Tips to Have a Healthy Cat

The Essential Cat

Your little friend has certain needs, some of those are basic:  good food,  fresh water, liter box, and bowls or glasses. Bowls are used for food, while drinking water from glasses make cats feel fancy and elegant. Carriers are also important, as are ID collars and microchips, especially if your cat spends time outside the home area.

Did you know cats usually can sleep up to twenty hours a day? But when they’re not sleeping, eating, or showing off in windows for passersby to admire, they are playing and enjoying time. Toys, therefore, are a great way for your kitten to hone its hunting skills, stay fit, and not get bored while you’re away at work.

A piece of colorful string, toy mice filled with catnip, balls, or laser pointers -- be careful not to direct it into the cat’s eyes -- are all good toys for your little riend. Rotating the toys is also a good idea, as the kitty will enjoy rediscovering an old friend .

  • For simple diarrhea, try an herbal remedy called slippery elm.
  • If your cat doesn’t improve in a week, bring a fecal sample to your veterinarian to determine if the diarrhea is caused by intestinal parasites or any other pathogens.
  • When your cat grooms himself, the ingested hair may get stuck in her stomach, resulting in vomiting and other problems. Other times, the hair remains in the esophagus, creating irritation and coughing.
  • To help decrease the amount of hair your cat swallows every day, brush or comb her daily. In addition, give him a hair ball medicine or put some Vaseline on the top part of her paw once or twice in a week. The cat will lick it off as part of her grooming ritual.
  Eyes
Your cat’s eyes should be bright and clear, with no signs of runniness, redness or soreness. Your little friend should not squint or shy away from light and if you notice him bumping into objects all of a sudden, we recommend you take him to your vet for a thorough exam. This can help your kitty to control himself.
  Nose
Your kittiy's nose is usually soft and damp to the touch. There should be no crusting on the surface of a healthy nose, nor should there be any runny or thickened discharges or bleeding. If you do notice any discharge, (particularly if your cat’s eyes are also runny) you should take him to the vet for a thorough clinical exam as cats are susceptible to flu and other illnesses,
Thirst
Healthy cats eating dry or wet food often don't appear to drink much and usually like to drink from unusual sources such as dripping taps or ran drops. Outdoor cats will often find a source of water outside of the home, but regardless of whether your cat is an indoor or outdoor cat, ALWAYS have a large bowl of fresh, clean and healthy water available. If your little kitty friend suddenly becomes very thirsty or starts drinking more than usual without excessive exercise, it can indicate an underlying medical problem and you should consult your vet.

 Avoid overfeeding

Obesity can lead to numerous health problems and may shorten your cat’s life easily.

  Keep your kitty on a regular exercise routine to help preserve muscle tone and to keep bones and joints strong and fit.

  Don’t overlook your cat’s dental health. Have your cat’s teeth cleaned by your veterinarian when needed, and brush them at home on a regular basis.

  Have your veterinarian perform regular vaccinations and remedies.

  Keep your senior cat’s bed and surrounding area clean, and always remain proactive in controlling fleas and parasits.

  Don’t forget to give your cat plenty of love and attention every day – the keys to a healthier and more f
