Stop a Cat from Biting and Scratching

How to Stop a Cat from Biting and Scratching

First you have to understand  what encourages your cat to change his behavior.

Cats normally  respond best to positive reinforcement, namely praising and rewarding appropriate behavior, ignoring and withdrawing from inappropriate behavior.

Never and never hit, shout, chase or lose your temper with your cat. You will easily terrify the cat and cause the cat to become nervous and confused.
  • Never call your cat to you and then punish him. Your little friend  hasn't a clue why you're responding negatively to him, as being called to a person is usually associated with pleasant answers it also is divorced from the incident that has annoyed or upset you.

Learn to anticipate biting or scratching behavior aimed at human.

Many cat owners learn to read and know cues that their cat is about to do something like biting and scratching people cues are no different. If you are petting him or doing any other sort of interaction with him, watch for signs like dilated pupils, skin rippling. If your cat is staring at you and has their ears pointed backward or twitching, you should stop and give your cat some space. Once you sense that your cat is about to start biting or scratching you, there are things you can do to stop this bad behavior, such as:
  • Picking him out and placing him onto the scratching pole and praising him for scratching it instead of you or your family.
  • Handing him a catnip mouse to bite instead of you.
  • Pushing him aside and leaving him alone.
Avoid soothing your little friend after biting or scratching.

After you've disciplined your little friend, do not begin cuddling and petting him. This will absolutely confuse your cat and give him mixed feelings, so next time he's likely to bite you just as hard. Don't start it and he won't continue.

Prepare more entertainment.

Get more cat toys for your little friend to chew on and a scratching post to scratch on. Cats need to bite, chew and scratch for fun and practice, but not on human. Try playing with your cat using a fishing pole toy, so your hands will be free of bites.
